Friends Mentoring Program: The Program improves the student’s self-esteem and academic performance through one-on-one interaction, encouragement of his/her efforts to improve, and coaching, when appropriate, in academic areas.

Each year, we try to offer an opportunity for some of our mentees to tour an area institution. So far, they have explored Kennesaw State, Southern Crescent Technical College, and Clayton State. This year we are hoping to visit Georgia State and Georgia Tech. Though we have funds for transportation, those funds have strict parameters and cannot cover the cost of food. Feeding our students not only keeps them going physically, but it also motivates them to be more engaged. So in lieu of charging each student for lunch, which would have kept some from joining us, we were able to cover the cost of lunch in the commons with your generous donation. The students got to experience the college dining hall system and food options during the peak lunch hour. The added bonus here was the opportunity to dine with current college students who were previously in the Fayette County Public School program that these students are currently in. They were able to share experiences and words of wisdom with each other. It was quite inspiring and completely enhanced the total field trip experience for all. (see photo #2)

Thank you, again, for including us in your community contributions. Here is a link to one of our slide shows where your contributions were recognized. We look forward to being a part of this year's tournament.

Flat Rock Sewing Seeds

An Intergenerational Mentoring Program

Grant Report

"Sewing Seeds" is a Flat Rock Church program that fosters intergenerational social skills and personal development through learning how to sew. The program is designed for the teens of the Young People’s Department (YPD) to learn how to sew from the senior citizen Life Enrichment Group (LEG) during the months of June and July. During that time, the teens created a sling bag while also bridging the gap between different age groups, to foster mutual understanding, cooperation, and meaningful interactions. The goal was to create a mutually beneficial exchange where both generations learn from each other, share experiences, and contribute to community well-being.

Great Oak Youth Development Centers: The Centers develop a foundation for achievement and success by directly providing educational assistance, leadership and life skills, training, cultural awareness activities, and mentoring.

With the funding, we have successfully opened our second computer lab in a public housing community, upgraded our computers to meet the increasing demands of modern educational technology, and ensured that the children in our program have access to nutritious snacks while learning. Additionally, this funding has positioned us to leverage additional financial resources, further amplifying our impact.

Since implementing these upgrades and expansions, we’ve seen remarkable results. From September 2023 to May 2024, 40 participants answered 30,211 questions using the IXL Computer Software, practicing for a total of 192 hours and 56 minutes. This led to demonstrated progress in 626 skills, underscoring the tangible impact of our programs. These numbers clearly highlight the importance of consistent educational support and access to technology for the at-risk children residing in public housing.

The sustained progress and engagement of the children in our programs illustrate how critical it is to provide them with the resources and skills necessary for academic success. None of this would have been possible without the continued funding and partnership from the Scott Mentorship Golf Tournament Group.

We hope to maintain this momentum and expand even further, ensuring that more children benefit from these vital resources. Your continued support is invaluable in our mission to foster educational growth, social development, and a brighter future for the young minds we serve.
